Ōtanewainuku is an unmodified podocarp/broadleaf type forest with over 300 plant species including rimu, mataī, kahikatea, miro, halls tōtara, tawa, pukatea, kohekohe, rewarewa, hīnau, tānekaha, mangeao, kāmahi and tāwari.

These majestic trees support a rich variety of epiphytes including orchids, perching lilies, rātā and puka vines.

Sub canopy and understorey species include: mamaku, nīkau, pigeonwood, mahoe, fivefinger, patē, lancewood, silver fern, makomako, kawakawa, kanono, supplejack, kiekie, toropapa, and gully tree fern.

Ground cover is mostly crown ferns, hen and chicken fern, and seedlings of the above species.
