Bait Station intensification 2015

Bait Station intensification 2015

Increasing bait station density

This year’s intensification project outcome was to reduce our existing bait station grid network from 150m x 75m to 75m x 75m. This effectively meant a new line to be cut between all lines on the existing grid.

Guided by ecologist Hamish Dean and entomologist Peter Maddison, join us as we explore the Rimu Track at night and learn about the great work being undertaken by Otanewainuku Kiwi Trust to restore this

forest ecosystem.

Search by torchlight and listen out for the forest’s nocturnal creatures including glow-worms, ruru (morepork), cave weta and other invertebrates, and hopefully hear our forest kiwi. Wear warm clothes and sturdy footwear and bring a raincoat, torch, snacks and water bottle.

Workday for Sunday 21 September

Volunteers needed

The Otanewainuku Kiwi Trust is currently carrying out a bait station operation at Otanewainuku. The operation is targeting possums and rats. Animal pests are arguably the greatest threat to the forest ecosystem and the operation is timed to knock down pest numbers in time for the beginning of the next bird breeding season.

The bait station operation last winter had fantastic results with our best ever bird breeding season, plus the bonus of several fledged kokako chicks.

We have a planned workday for this Sunday the 21st of September.

Awards, Bequests and a new Op's Chair

The Trust received a generous bequest in the will of the late William (Bill) Couper. Bill often helped Dave Edwards and would be available with a willing pair of hands when needed. Later in his life he was not to be able to help us on work days due to failing health. This year we will be reviewing the strategic plans of the Trust. Gavin Cherrie has taken over the Ops chair position with a new structure in place for our Operations volunteers. We were runners up in the NZ Community of the Year awards. See below for more details.
