Otanewainuku Kiwi Trust - Rat Population Monitoring 2014

We are calling for volunteers to assist with the Rat Monitoring programme that must be completed before the annual ‘possum and rat toxin application operation can be started.  The attached sheet outlines what needs to be done.

The plan is to undertake the Rat Monitoring on the first suitable weekend selected from:

·         Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd August,

·         Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th August, and if necessary

·         Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th August.

For planning purposes please email me as soon as possible if you can help listing the days you are available.  You do not have to do both days on a weekend.  Please show your:

o   Email address,

o   Telephone number,

o   The dates you are available, and

o   How many people plan to come each day.

We need at least a dozen people each day.  More are welcome so skills can be learned.

The job is dependent on the Saturday night being fine. You will be contacted closer to the time when a weekend with fine weather is identified.  It may not be possible to make a final decision until the Friday.   Everyone who volunteers will be contacted.

You will need to bring clothing suitable for the day.  You should have drinking water and some snack food although you can expect to be back at the shelter by 12 Noon or earlier.

We will meet at 9.00am at the Otanewainuku shelter for a briefing and allocation of lines to groups.  We will have the ready-made tracking cards, peanut butter, map, and instructions for each group.  In case some improvements to the track markings are required we will have makers, tools, and tape for each group.  On the Saturday it might be desirable to trim back any new growth or recent windfalls as that makes the job on Sunday that much easier.  Loppers will be on hand.

Should you have some time one day prior to 2nd/3rd August and would like to do some track marking and/or vegetation clearing please contact me.  It may be possible to improve one or two of the lines in advance.  If there is interest I will see what I can arrange.
