Sheryl Peterson gives us an update of her latest venture withONE

We've been on another kiwi expedition to Murupara. Listening for male kiwi to put transmitters on for operation nest egg. this time was on a narrow gravel, used mainly by hunters, trampers and mountain bikers. We're back a day early because it's going to be wet tonight so little point in going out. Kiwi call doesn't travel well and the scent is washed out so the dogs can't track.

Bait Station intensification 2015

Workday for Sunday 21 September

Volunteers needed

The Otanewainuku Kiwi Trust is currently carrying out a bait station operation at Otanewainuku. The operation is targeting possums and rats. Animal pests are arguably the greatest threat to the forest ecosystem and the operation is timed to knock down pest numbers in time for the beginning of the next bird breeding season.

The bait station operation last winter had fantastic results with our best ever bird breeding season, plus the bonus of several fledged kokako chicks.

We have a planned workday for this Sunday the 21st of September.

Awards, Bequests and a new Op's Chair

The Trust received a generous bequest in the will of the late William (Bill) Couper. Bill often helped Dave Edwards and would be available with a willing pair of hands when needed. Later in his life he was not to be able to help us on work days due to failing health. This year we will be reviewing the strategic plans of the Trust. Gavin Cherrie has taken over the Ops chair position with a new structure in place for our Operations volunteers. We were runners up in the NZ Community of the Year awards. See below for more details.
